August Round-Up: Harvest complete. On to maize.

Harvest is now wrapped up after an extremely early start this year. Straw is stacked, carted off the fields, and grain is either in the shed or away to the mills.

There has been little let-up between grain and maize harvest, however, with many of our customers moving almost immediately onto maize once the arable crops were completed.

As August came to a close, attention also turned to the next jobs in the farming calendar: hedgecutting, cultivations and autumn muck applications.

Hedgecutting season

1st September marks the start of the 2026/27 hedgecutting season, and our hedgecutters are serviced, set up and ready for work.

Before the season begins, each machine is thoroughly checked and serviced, with flails sharpened ready for the months ahead. Between hires, our workshop team works through a machine-specific checklist, carrying out any required maintenance before it heads to the next customer.

Our McConnel hedgecutters offer a 6.5m telescopic reach, with 100-degree power slew helping operators cut into corners while also providing a compact transport position. Three-point linkage provides a secure connection while making mounting and dismounting from the tractor straightforward.

LED road lights are fitted as standard, while highway chevrons can also be fitted on request for increased visibility on the road.

With their combination of reach, manoeuvrability and power, they're a versatile option for farmers, agricultural contractors, estates and local authorities throughout the cutting season.

Need the tractor too?

Not every business has a suitable tractor available when hedgecutting work needs to be completed. Our tractor hire fleet can provide the additional horsepower needed to pair with a hedgecutter, giving you the option of hiring the complete set-up.

Cultivations

As harvest finishes, some of the largest tractors in our fleet come into their own.

At the top of the range, our John Deere 8R370 and 8R410 tractors provide up to the 400hp mark, making them particularly well suited to demanding autumn workloads including primary cultivations, drilling and supporting root crop harvests.

For larger farms and contractors, hiring additional horsepower for the busiest part of the season provides a way to increase capacity without investing in another high-horsepower tractor that may only be required for a relatively short period of the year.

It can also provide useful additional capacity when workloads overlap. Rather than moving your main tractor between jobs, an additional hire tractor can remain dedicated to cultivations or drilling while other machines continue elsewhere.

Our large tractors are available for short and longer-term hire, with nationwide delivery available.

From grain harvest to maize

August saw the final stages of an exceptionally early grain harvest, with our tractors, telehandlers and trailers continuing to support customers through one of the busiest periods in the agricultural calendar.

As grain harvest began to wrap up, there was little downtime before the next seasonal workload arrived. Maize cutting started during August, with some customers and contractors moving almost straight from one harvest into the next.

For our team, that has meant a particularly busy turnaround period. Trailers have returned from grain harvest, been checked and prepared in the yard, before heading straight back out for maize within tight timeframes.

As we move into September, maize harvest continues, with trailers supporting local farms as well as contractors looking for additional capacity alongside their own fleets.

Machine focus: Toppers

With crops cleared from the fields, our toppers have seen an increase in demand.

Post-harvest is a useful opportunity to tackle headlands, field margins, rough grass and overgrown areas that may have been inaccessible while crops were standing.

Hiring a topper can make particular sense for seasonal work. Rather than owning a machine, it can be brought in when required and returned once the work is complete.

Our topper range also provides flexibility depending on the job. Alongside conventional front and rear-mounted machines, we offer a side-arm rear-mounted topper with a 2.6m working width, hydraulic offset and the ability to work from -65° to +90° – useful for banks, verges and areas that are more difficult to reach with a standard topper.

Muckspreading

Post-harvest has also seen both our side and rear discharge muckspreaders heading out to customers for autumn applications ahead of cultivations and drilling.

Our rear discharge spreaders are suited to general farmyard manure and compost, while the side discharge machines provide an alternative for wetter and sloppier material.

As the initial post-harvest rush begins to ease, availability across the muckspreader fleet is starting to increase, providing more opportunities for short-term hires through the autumn.

Planning the next job?

With harvest complete, there is still plenty happening across farms through September and into autumn.

From tractors and trailers to hedgecutters and muckspreaders, machinery can be hired for short seasonal requirements or longer-term workloads.
